broke thermometer/heater thing in fish tank

Yesterday I accidentally broke the thermometer in brothers fish tank that contains 3 dwarf puffer fish, i think thats what they're called. Anyway, i just put the tip of my finger in there and the water is kind of cold.

Can i just go to some pet store and buy a new one?

Yes, they are easy to obtain. It was probably a combined heater/thermostat - almost all are these days. Take the broken one with you and get one of the same rating, they come in various Wattages.
