just curiousto see to what degree they filter water.... cheap RO unit?

Not as good as RO. I recall that if your tap water has a TDS in the 400 range the brita will get it down to around 160 but RO should give out <5.

So they are better than nowt, but no real replacement as all it really is doing is just running water through some carbon and perhaps a couple of other things.

thanks guys was just a thought! hmmm ive got a small nano tank on its way and im after a very small RO unit, any cheap pnes about?

You can get compact systems for about 45 to 50 quid.

www.osmotics.co.uk sell the compacts. They are only about 36G a day but being in England with out temperatures your not going to get that turn over. Not a problem for a nano tank though if you just changing a few gal a week.

RO man sells full size system for about £60 and up with DI as well. They are in the 50-75 gal a day range.

When buying an RO filter check to see how much the replacement filters will cost. Some filters can seem cheep but the replacement filters and membranes for some can cost a fortune.

I thought Brita filters were just cheep DI filters? Is this true.

Righto, I looked into doing this a while back...like he said, better than not, but its not nearly as affective as an RO/DI unit.

there is something to think about with britta. they use silver as an anti bacterial. now the silver content of the filtered water is about 5 parts per million. this seems well below the level that may be a danger, but it is worth knowing.
