I have a male Bristlenose in my tank, had him for 6 years now. I bought him on the advise that he is good at eating algae .... but I just find that he hides in his cave and goes to the toilet all day long. When food is dropped in the tank, he comes flying out of the cave and charges to the site where the food has dropped. I find him quite aggressive at feeding time as well, knocking every fish out his way due to his size and speed.

I am ashamed to say that bought him for a purpose and not for his looks (was a cute thing when he was small) Do these plecs get lazy with age?? I do get a build up of algae on the glass and the rocks. Thinking of investing in a couple of Otos, at least they are cute to look at...

Thanks.

I also have a bristlenose, and he only comes out at night when the lights are off. I think as they get bigger they do get lazier as i have to clean my glass of algea every week.

ottos would be better i think, but i would take the BN back. Corydoras are good too for cleaning gravel

You mean trade in the Bristlenose to the local fish shop?

I've found that BNs are a bit too boisterous to go with smaller community fish, as they can be real bullies at feeding time and not all small fish would be able to stand up to that.
