hey,
my danios are like always laying eggs and they do hatch, i've had little fish in there before, I can't rear them in the tank alone as my male fighting fish just chomps on them :p

I've got a little breeding trap, and would like to have a go at rearing some in that so they can't be eaten, can anyone tell me how to go about it, like when to add the danios, how many....male and female....or just a female when it gets fatter with eggs.....etc.

And any advice on rearing fry....I know about liquifry and stuff, just basically need to know when to section off a female to lay her eggs :)

thanks!!! :good:

You can't just simply remove the female. Spawning requires both male and female to be present for viable fry. The male will need to fertilize the eggs as they are laid. They are not live bearers.

Move male and female into a seperate breeding tank with a layer of round marbles at the bottom. Both male and female should be conditioned on live foods and ready for spawning. This tank should be at least 10 gallons. Eggs will fall in between the marbles so parents can't eat them. Fry hatch within 36 hours and look like little white tadpoles against the glass. They become free swimming in 3 days. Adults should be removed directly after spawning to prevent consumption of eggs and/or fry.

Ok so that answers one question....I have to put a male and a female in the breeding trap.....

any more help???? -_-

If its the same kind of breeding trap for livebearers (I think I know the one your talking about) then I dont think it will work. The eggs will just fall though and get eaten, same with any young. Your best bet is to set up a seperate tank with a layer of marbles on the bottom, then when the fish have spawned remove them and put them in the original tank. The other option I can think of is to have lots and lots and lots of plants/hiding spots eg. java moss and similar.

The breeding trap has a shelf like part, so the parents can't get to the eggs, and the eggs stay in the bottom of the trap, and don't fall out into the tank :)
I was planning to get some marbles or small glass stones to help the eggs stick when they fall through aswell :)

I've raised a number of danios by just saving water from a PWC in a 5g bucket. Place the bucket in a warm room. Wait about 4 days and you may see some tiny wigglers...

I do have a spare heater and a container which is meant for carrying small rodents but could double as a danio breeding tank, it's probably about 5-6 litres :)

i did the same... when harvesting danio fry i use a large tub to save the water when doing a gravel vacuuming and water change. i usually find live fry right then but i also leave the water sitting for a few days and find more have hatched. i may throw a heater in the tub when its cold, but i usually just let it sit as is. i use a turkey baster to gently "inhale" then "exhale" the fry from the tub to my grow out tank.

do you think a small filter would be needed?
Also when I can do this.....do I need a net or something half way down so eggs can fall through, or just add danios to it, and remove them after and hope they haven't eaten too many eggs?
