would it be possible to have 1 male and 3 females in my breeding tank or would theyre be a conflict when breeding?

More females than males is ideal in most non-pairing fish species. For example: discus and angels pair off and it takes just that pair. In egg scattering species (tiger barbs are one of them) one male can service several females.

In rainbows, it is preferred to use 2 to 3 males and as many females as you can safely put into the tank. This results in higher numbers of eggs.

great :good:
ive got three fat females and one male whos slim so ive put the in the breeding tank which has a spawning mop, heater and a sponge filter in it.

should i have the light on or off when breeding?

It shouldn't matter much. Most importantly, the breeding tank needs to be in a quiet secluded area with little foot traffic. Mine is in my bedroom.

mines is on a shelf in my room..
across from my main tank ..
do you think i should cover the breeding tank so that they dont get stressed by the other tank?

i think they'll be fine, mine lay eggs all the time in my community tank with me walking around my room...if you notice them breeding just let them do their thing until their done, then id remove them so they dont eat the eggs, unless you have marbles at the bottom...good luck, im trying to breed too, right now my female (i only have one lol) is alone, waiting til sunday before i put the male in with her...

the have maybe six times all together...between the first and second time about 2 weeks, then they started laying every five days, the female never looked fat enough to lay so i had to separate her if i want enough eggs in her...

I havent used a mop, nor do i have one in their tank, i think you should tie a cork to the top of it so it floats tho...also that chasing seemed more territorial...are there 3 females with one male? I only saw 3 fish...the male chases the female but not as quickly as seen, its almost like stop and go traffic, they will spread then get back together...the male generally tries to get under the female as if to nip the lower anal fin, if there are other males they will chase after her too but the dominant male will fight them off then get back to the female...

nope nothing,
do you think i should either wait a day or to or separate the male from the females
and only have one female and one male?

It seems easier to do it one male one female...that way there isnt competition, i havnt tried a male with multiple females because i only have one female lol...if the females dont look as plump they may have already spawned and the eggs were porbably eaten...also i put the female alone in the breeding tank for about 5 days and gave her blood worms once a day, gave the males some too...then put them together, after an hour did a slight water change, within 40 minutes they started laying...

If you can i would separate them for a few days...then bring one of each together...good luck

ive put the 3 females in the main tank and left the male in the breeding tank..
how long do you think i should leave them in the tanks until bring just 2 together?

you can have them apart for 2 weeks if you want, i had them away form eachother for 5 days, it all depends on how many fry you want...i dont want too much so i separated them for a shorter time...you should feed twice a day with a high protein food (i used blood worms) while they are separated...

also i would try keeping the females in the breeding tank, when the male gets introduced he doesnt take as long to adjust as the female does so spawning can occur sooner, if you are on a time constraint...if you add the females second they could either not breed til the middle of the night or very early morning, this happened to me, woke up at 6 am and they already breed and ate the eggs...

hope this helps!

also get some methylene blue, it helps the eggs not get fungus on them...
