I just moved my 1 female along with the male she has mated with the past two times they have laid eggs to a 10 gallon tank...i put a thin layer of gravel in with a couple rocks and some plants...so far they are just hiding...just wondering if ten gallons is enough...this is my first attempt actually trying to get some fry...any pointers anyone could give would be hugely appreciated...:good:...a site i read said they should breed the morning after being transferred. is this accurate?

Usually soon after the fish has adjusted to the new tank and occupants they will breed. However generally the fish need to be conditioned with high nutrient diets before they are bred. I am assuming you did this? The female is large (full of eggs)?

Also is the new tank cycled?

What i would do is separate them to their own tank, males to one and females to another tank, feed then well for 2 weeks of blood worm tetra prima etc etc. Once the females are ready then introduce 1 female to 2 males to the spawning tank.
Marbels is the ideal bottom this allows the eggs to fall through but stops the adualts from eating them.

Once hatched i would start the brine shrimp, so once the become free swimming i can introduce a little NHBS to the tank, this is quite large as a first food but the fry will be able to take it once they have fully absorbed their yolk sac.

Thanks for your replies!

yes tank is cycled, and the female is huge...they have bred before but in my 55 gallon and all the eggs were eaten...i was just feeding them their regular flakes, didn't know this played a big role...

What role does the special feeding play? both of you mentioned this...i will be home to monitor them so once they finish laying i will remove them...Thanks for the fry feeding tips

Conditioning the fish will yeild more in number and more fertile eggs. As said, marbles are best but plenty of people have fry hatch on gravel. I assume you remove the parents after spawning as the parents will eat the fry.

I breed rainbows, and they spawn in plants or a yarn mop. As far as actually breeding fish, the conditioning is the same.

If you don't condition them with high protine foods then spawning will be random.

With conditioning this will hopefully induce spawning with a first couple of days.
It's just so u can watch then intencsely to see the spawning and remove them, other wise you could easily miss it.

Alright, i understand now, Thanks for the info!! well the little buggers laid their eggs before i woke up this morning at 6 am :hyper:  so idk if they ate all the eggs or any at all lol, but i took em out right after i realized it...so now the waiting game...Thanks again for your replies
