Hi,
I'm after any advice or experience with breeding the siamese fighter, I've kept them for a while in my community tank and thought I'd have a go at breeding them.
I've bought a small tank and a white male and copper green and red female.
Within a day they have spawned and the male is now looking after the eggs, so all is normal there.
I've turned off the fluval filter and replaced with an air fed sponge filter but there will be no bacteria build up on it for the fry to feed on as its all happened so fast.
I've been advised to use dirty pond water or carefully take some of the filter media and remove organic matter from that.
My question is how should this be fed ? and in what quantities and intervals.

Cheers
Jay

I don't believe they feed on the filter bacteria, they feed on infusoria for a day or 2 after becoming free swimming, but you also need other things like Microworms and live baby brine shrimp. Betta fry do much better on live foods like this. For infusoria, you can get this in green water which you make by putting a plant from an established tank or a piece of cabbage in some used tank water and put it where it will get lots of sun (a window sill), and within a few days there should be an infusoria culture going (although sometimes it can take longer). Microworm cultures you can get via the internet (aquabid or The Bug Farm). BBS you can get eggs at your lfs and build a hatchery (unless you want to buy one, but building one is easy), just do a google search on brine shrimp hatching. You need these foods SOON as the fry will starve to death if you aren't prepared. Good luck :)

Hi Thanks for the info, I've been out this afternoon to get brine shrimp eggs and I've made a hatchery.
I've been told the babies feed on the remainder of there egg casings for a day or so so I should have time to get the baby brine shrimp resdy and to culture some other food :D
Only prob I have now is removing the male as I have a male in my community tank already :/
