Hi there!

I've been trying to do a lot of research on spawning and the breeding of fish and I keep comming upon the phrase " in the breeding season". None of my resources actually tells me when the breeding season is. Is it also in spring like the rest of the animals or does it depend on the type of fish?

Just want to know!

Their is no set breeding season, it all depends on the fish.

Some are triggered by the length of day light (photoperiod)
Some by the temperature.
Others by the volume of water.
These are the 3 main triggers, how ever their are many others you may also need to think of like water quality, pH, calcium levels.

For example goldfish need temps of over 22C for 2 weeks to induce spawning.
Golden Orfe go by daylight so when it's 16 hours of light in the spring they spawn all at the same time.
Trout need very cool water and a short photo period to induce spawning.

helter is right, it depends on the type of the fish. in your tank you can control many things of the fish world...... you can make the breeding season come whenever you want!! as long as you know how the fish get triggered.
