Well due to them being in the "tetra" family they are egg scatters. Ypu would want a shoal of atleast 3, pref. 1 male - 2 female.
Feed them plenty of live food and perhaps in the spring put the temp up a degree or two.

It has only ever been achieved a few times in captivity, so good luck

No it hasnt

There are plently of people who have successfully bred red's in captivity, hence why there are "tank raised" reds and the price being so cheap for them because their bred by the dozen. Perhaps your thinking of caribe which them being bred in captivity is pretty much unheard of.

For breeding, you need to have a sexually mature pair. To be honest you need a pair that has been raised together for it to work. They dig a small depression in the gravel/sand for the eggs. You need to simulate the rainy/dry season by a temp rise , lowering the water level, cut back on feed for a period of maybe a couple of months then do a large cooler water change and attach a spray bar to the filter outlet. That is the most likely thing to do but only if they are mature and near breeding condition.

To be honest, if you have little experience its unlikely to work.
