Hi. My female platy just had her first babies. I have never breeded fish before in my life. They are in a small 2 and 1/2 gallon tank. They tiny babies are hiding in a special plant I bought. How do I go about feeding them, raising them, and making sure they live? I hear that the parents will eat the babies or something.

 I never raised platy fry, but I do have guppy and molly fry and their care is basicly the same. Does the tank (where the babies are in) have a filter and heater? Here's a little information about caring for your new arrivals! :D

Feeding
You should feed the fry crushed flakes or a special powder called "First Bites" that is designed for baby fish. I prefer to feed my fry both crushed falkes and "First Bites." To crushed up the flakes, you put some in a small plastic bag and silmply crush the food between you fingers until it turns into a powder. Feed the fry about 3-4 times a day, but only what they can eat in a few minutes.

Care
Platy fry tend to grow slower than guppies, but with the proper care they should grow up nicely. The parents would eat the fry, so it's best to seperate them.

the platy fry look like small orange specks im not evern sure if they are fry or a reflection of the gravel. I do have a filter, not a heater.

Hi

I bread Platy's without relising until they were quite big, If you have noticed them don't worry the Platy's parents wont eat them. If you have anything else in the tank What ?

Otherwise just feed the parents the normal food that you feed them and the babies will eat what they can.

E.G.

If you feed them flakes them the fry will eat the little bits that fall off as the parents eat.

If you feed them Live or Frozen they will eat them as well. The Funniest things is watching a tiny Palty eating a live blood worm.

They will almost look after themselfs, Keep an eye on how many you have i started with 4 and within 3 months i had 11 of them .

Good Luck hope this helps

you can also buy liquid fry food, which you drip into the tank :)

good luck

Do you have orange platty's? sunset or wag? My first fry was an orange speck as well... mommy is an orange sunset platty

Just be sure when you are feeding the crushed flakes that you don't overfeed. The smaller size makes it easier for the food to fall between the gravel pieces where it will decay and foul your water. Personally, I just feed the same to the babies as I do to the parents, like lukej said. I have used the First Bites and also the liquid fry food, but never found it necessary with livebearer fry--it is good stuff for egglayer fry, corycats, angels, etc. Another suggestion would be to maybe invest in a larger tank for the babies to grow up in. 10 gal would be good, 20 gal would be great. I have found platies to be slower growers also, but they're good looking and worth the effort. Congratulations and good luck!
