I was sold a male and a female bristlenose plec as a breeding pair. They had previously bred and were in the petshop along with thier babies.

Does this mean that they will breed for me or is it not a certainty? The male hides a lot and has made a sort of cave which is just a depression in the gravel between my bogwood and a plastic tube. Is this a good enough cave for them?

Also my female has bristles  all along her 'chin' and I have read on here loads of times when people how to sex them that the female doesnt have bristles. They are shorter than the males and only around the chin so, is she a girl???

Many thanks

I "think" females, are wider than males, and do get bristles just not as many as males :D.

Edit: I think im right about one thing: "these fish can be easily sexed by the amount of bristles on their nose, males have a lot of bristles whereas the females have small amount."

Corrosive, you gotta be more specific.
Females CAN get bristles, and if they do they are ONLY at the end of the mouth. So Cavafish if that is so shes a female. Well obvisouly is because they are a breeding pair...
Females are no wider then males... they just get big bellies when pregnant

So Sam, if my pair have had babies before does it mean that they WILL have babies again or can the disruption of being bought and sold be too much and this stop them?

Also, is a half-hidden depression in the gravel good enough for the male or should i block the end of one of my pieces of pipe for him. At the moment the ends are open on the pipe and the only fish that really get in there are my flying foxes.

By the way, should have said this first really, THANKS for the help - it IS appreciated. :D

Firstly, yes your male and female will probly breed, but your male has to find a spawning site and stay there for awhile.

Also you may not think it is good enough, but if he picked it obviously it is :D
They should be spawning in no time.
Oh and also bout the flying fox's, bnose are very good dads, they wont let anything near it, and i dont think they will eat the fry/eggs anyways

Brilliant!

I am following the logs re: raising b.nos fry on here with great interest. Find it hard to contribute or comment as I dont know anything yet

It is nice to have an insight into what will hopefully happen BEFORE it does. Just gotta try to remember it :S :fun:

cheers
