I'm planning on having a heavily planted tank with ghost shrimp in it. I'm hoping that they will breed. My questions revolve around tank mates.

It's almost going to be a species only tank, except I'd like to put a couple sifter shrimp (bamboo, vampire, etc) in there with them. I have two questions:
Will a sifter shrimp eat the ghost shrimp fry?
Will a sifter shrimp's presence "scare" ghost shrimp and prevent them from spawning to begin with?

I've never bred ghost shrimp before. From what I understand it's not terribly complicated, but I have heard that they won't breed in the presence of predators. So would a sifter be a predator? And even if not might the ghosts consider it to be?

Thanks for any advice!

My Cherry shrimp are breeding ok with the Giant African Filter shirmp in my tank. The GAFS sometimes stomps through the group of cherrys causing them to scatter, but I've never seen him hurt one. I've even seen young cherry shrimp sitting on his back being ignored! The presence of a filter shrimp shouldn't stop the ghost shrimp breeding.

It is possible the young shrimp will be filtered as they have a freshwater larval stage. Unfortuntely I've never kept ghost shrimp so have no idea how likely this is, hopefully somebody who has bred them will know.

Also be careful to make sure you get Palaemonetes sp, shrimp and not long arm Macrobracium shrimp which are sometimes sold as ghosts. Macro shrimp are normally too aggressive to be kept with a Filter shrimp.

Thanks Shrimper! That gives me great confidence.

And I've had ghosts before, but always in a community tank where they ended up being a snack down the road. I've never had a chance to breed them. I took a look at the macros and I don't think I've ever seen them before. I'll keep an eye out though, thanks for the heads up. Hopefully the LFS will have some ghosts so I'll be able to inspect before hand.

Thanks again :good:
