I want to try my luck at breeding African Dwarf Frogs. What is the smallest tank I can use to do this? Will a 2.5 gallon work? If so where can i find the best deal on one of these smaller tanks that has a filtration system in the lid? Other then that and a heater what do I need to get it set up? Thanks

I've never kept them but from all I've read, I think you would need a bigger tank. A 2.5G is barely big enough for 1-2. Most fish like bigger spaces for breeding but I guess anything is possible. Did you read through the Pinned Topic on aquatic frogs? I bet there is tons of info in there.

You can often find 10G tank for free or next to nothing on FreeCycle, garage sales, etc. I would try to set up a 10G and then you could have 4 ADF's which would give you a better chance of breeding.

You probably could do two adf and only that in a 2.5 gallon. I have kept mine in a 5 gallon before and that was fine. so yea they will probably be ok if its just them but still more room would be nice but wtvr u want. :good:

I got a 5 gallon hex. I have it cycling right now so before long I'll move it to my office and throw a pair in. I still need some decorations for it other then the gravel. My office is decorated with a Dallas Cowboy theme so I am thinking of finding a small helmet to drop in there and maybe a football?

that would be cool, make sure you provide plenty of hiding spaces as they dont just sit out in the open unless they are looking for food. They make these little bridges for aquariums that are like 2 dollars. These are perfect because they are just small enough for the frog to fit under. Good luck they are so cute and so much fun! :good:

I would think a helmet would provide a great hiding place yet I could still check in on them. So what do you all think. Will two frogs fill this thing? I plan to put it in my office so fish that need fed twice a day just add to the expence since I won't be there every day. How many frogs can I put in there to breed? Maybe 2 females and a male?

These guys are very small with a 5 gallon I would say no more than 3 maybe 4. It will be very hard for you to sex them before you buy, but the males have a small "pimple"behind their front arms. It is a white bump. If you look around there is more info on that on this site. doesnt really matter though unless you really are trying to breed them (which can be done). they are very peaceful. Make sure that you look at their front "feet" and make sure they are webbed. if they are claws without webbing it is a african clawed frog and that will get big and aggressive. One last thing make sure you pick up some frozen bloodworms to feed them every other day or so...you really do need to feed them these instead of pellets or flake food, i thought it was gross at first but it just looks like red ice cubes and u just drop one in the tank. Plus they go nuts for them and will love u for it by being healthy! hope that helps sorry it is so long...let me know how its goin..

P.S. the helmets will work great along with other hiding spots.. i was thinking for your football setup you can buy fake plants (which are fine for your tank and frogs) with your team colors....i dont know might look kinda cool....you can find glow in the dark ones too! sorry way too long of a post

SORRY....one more thing very important! make sure your tank is cycled before adding your frogs, they are hardy but can be sensitive to poor water chemistry since they absorb chemicals through their skin and that can kill them... I make it sound way too hard.

The one I have now gets fed blood worms once a week with the rest of my fish (plus their regular feeding.) From what I have read I had planned on feeding them twice a week. Is this not enough? I haven't been able to get a good look at the one I have to sex it, can i take him out and hanlde him to do this? Finding silver and blue plants might be hard but I'll try.

Twice a week should be ok, in the wild they dont get to eat everyday, just make sure he doesnt look starved but i would say your fine. As for taking him out, i really wouldnt. First it is very stressful to net him and he/she will dry out very very quickly and die. I just wouldnt do it. If you watch the tank for long enough you will be able to tell when they come close to you. like i said the males have the bump and tend to be smaller. The females have a small bump where a tail would be between their back legs. Oh, I think i forgot to tell you....Adf males will sing when ready to mate!! its pretty cool to listen to.AND adf shed their skin about once a week, it is halarious to watch and they eat it when theyre done!! (what a helathy meal). Good luck and let me know whats goin on  :good:

You mean they're not always ready to breed? What kind of guys are these?
They have to reach sexual maturity before they can mate just like any other animal, they wont always sing so its not like you are waiting for that. i think sexual maturity is like 8 months so by the time you buy them from the petstore they will be very close if not already sexual mature. Dont worry they will mate, the male will clinch onto the the fmeales back and do it "froggy" style. she does all the swimming while he does nothing  you will soon have little eggs.
