breeding BN plecs

hi. How do you know what sex your plecs are? You might be able to help me. I've got two. Ones about 2" and the other 2 1/2". Had them both for about year and half. Neither have bristles, but the bigger one is starting to get little ones (like whiskers rather than bristles). Do you know if this means I have too females coz I would really like to breed them as well. there's sites on the net if you research. I've read how to breed them, just have to get the right sexes.
They like to lay there eggs in caves that you can make with a plastic tunnel semi covered in the stones. I read that the female lays the eggs which is cluster of yellow and the male protects them from all the other fishies. Dunno if you know that already, but that's about it really. they like a cave, or they make one themselves - a dip in the stones.

a female BN plec may hav small bristles but the males bristles are much larger
