i am thinking about breeding bettas, once my little female gets bigger. she's a baby, almost an inch long now. once she hits 2 or 2 1/2 inches, i want to breed her. she is very pretty, i have a nice breeding tank. but i still gotta buy a one or two gallon tank for the daddy i'm going to buy. but the question is: how dangerous is it? is a 5 gallon tank a good sized tank to breed bettas in? will the male rip apart the female or vise versa? plz tell me.

you NEED a 10g atleast for when you do breed.

Yes breeding is ricky and dad may tear her up. That's why you condition them for several weeks.

Now, there is something you need to know, you should breed her soon!!! When she's 2-2 1/2 inches, she may be TOO old to breed!

You also got to remember that when fry grow to several weeks old, the males will start fighting so you'll have to have separate tanks for each one.

There's alot involved... But before you do it, you need to read up on it REALLY good!!!

It can work with a 5 gallon, but it's much easier to control water quality and leave growing room in a 10 gallon. However, if you're just planning to breed in the 5, and then want to transfer to a larger tank, that's quite all right. Just do it gently.

It depends on the spawning pair. Some are very gentle. Some males will tear a female to bits. Some females will tear a male to bits. And some pairs will simply tear EACH OTHER to bits. So there's not a real easy way to answer that question.

some people have had gerat spawns in 2.5Gs but you HAVE to know what you are doing :) personally im not breeding in anything smaller than 10G

Not true :/

I spawned my pair successfully in a four gallon. I have some lovely little fry who are about a week old now! :D I have been told that you can spawn them in as little as a 3 gallon tank! 5 is probably the best though.. As long as you have a bigger tank to move them into later, thats the main thing! Oooh, and lots of jars!

Well i wasnt trying to breed them but she past the divider and the spaned but the nest was accedentally destroyed. Not be me the tank was a wierd shape and some water evaporated. But the male injured the female. Not to much just fins and things. But because of that she grew a fungas which i wasn't present. I researched it and read alot that the breeders not worrieing about the females fin injuries and that it would grow back in two weeks. Well because they made it seem so not dangerouse i secured the divider again so she coul't get out. The fungus she then grew transfered to the male and she eventially died and now the male is not doing well. The fugus grew even though i had aquarium salt in it and everything. OIts tricky and if you are going to try it seporate them in 2 diffrent tanks.

hmmm... I guess thats just what the website person thought when I read up on it. O well. I NEED a 10g for if I breed them  . i am not very experienced with that...

Plus it must be taken into account that U.S. gallons and U.K. gallons are not the same thing.

It is generally recommended to use a tank of 10 U.S. gallons. That is what I use.
