why is it when u breed bettas the female always get chaced aroung loads and gets her fins riped b4 she wants to breed? surely this hurts her.
 
its juts how they court eachother i guess, the male also userally gets a bit chewed up, it shouldn't be too severe thogh, juts nips ;)
 
Natures way of survival of the fittest. Most animals fight among themselves to prove dominance to be the one to breed. The male wants her to be tough enough to breed, and the female should act the same way. In the wild, weak frightened fish die early. The strong ones go on to spawn themselves.
 
yup, Females have evolved to be able to move faster and be more maneuverable. It is a protective mechanism against the eggs being eaten or his nest being destroyed.
