I'm looking for some info on breeding apple snails.. I could just search google, but I'd rather trust someone here that has experience..

I have an empty 10g tank, and I'm moving within about 6 months.. so I'm just keeping something easy that I can breed and wont be difficult to move when the time comes..

I know they lay eggs above the water surface, so I'm assuming I should leave an inch or two between the top of the water and the black trim of the tank..

Other then that, do I just buy 5-10 and see what happens?

Mine crawl to the underside of the canopy to lay eggs. My waterline is to the black trim. I believe all they really need is a moist place of the water to lay the eggs.

i dont no about breeding apple snails but i do have 3 and soon as i got them with in a week 2 of them layed eggs and i mean bloody loads lol and they have done this a few times i dont want loads i only want the 3 i got so i have clown loaches to eat the babys if they ever hatch but so far so good when i find the eggs i just get rid of them anyway what im trying to say is i dont think it will be hard to breed them just get a few and stick them in a tank but you will end up with loads in no time on the hatching i dont no much i never give them a chance

here is a photo of one of mine just starting to lay eggs and there was a lot more then that when she was done lol

Wow thats cool.. I'm still trying to find apple snails around here..

We get mystery snails, which I'm assuming are pretty closely related to apple snails.. but they're always dead at the store.

I did buy some nerite snails yesterday though

From what I understand, Mystery Snails = Apple snails.

Yea I wasn't sure if they were the same or just closely related..

I was kinda excited to see some yesterday.. they'd just got them in, but I'd say a good 95% of them were dead..

They were $5 each.. I didn't feel like risking buying ones that could potentially be dead, or probably die soon.

I bought ''spikey nerite snails''

They're little snails with spikes coming off their backs.. one had some corrision on it's shell which I didn't notice in the store.. Will raise the ph a bit and see if that helps.

I wonder if they breed easily

Think of mystery snails as a type of apple snail. They can stay in periods of inactiveness which makes them to appear dead. They always look dead at my LFS, but are in fact still alive.

Nerite snails are trickier to breed because the eggs need brackish water to hatch, and so into a larval form.

I'll have to do some reading on nerite snails.. I wanted some sort of snail and I saw 3 climbing all over each other so I got all 3 of them...

I bought 3 mystery snails from them before, and they didn't ever move.. lol

All the ones in the tank looked like they were being eaten by the nerite snails.

I added some aqua salt to the tank they're in.. I added maybe 7 or 8 tablespoons I don't know.. the tank is 10g.. only other things in the tank are malaysian trumpet snails, and 2 other types of breed-like-crazy snails.. so I don't think they will mind.

2 of them were beside each other on the glass which is a good sign.. the one with the erosion on it's shell doesn't look too bad.. I'll have to test the ph and maybe raise it a bit..

Will also get some cucumber for them to eat.
