I'm looking to breed either 1/2 moon or crowntail bettas and my LFS CAN get hold of males, but their supplier said most people use regular females for breeding rather than 1/2moon / crowntail breeds, one staff member said there were no differences between females, only males.

I think I know what I think but I'd be interested to know your thoughts!

a regular female?!?! whats that... i have 2 females double tail and crown tail and i have one male crowntail!!

female crown tale arent hard to find! they are almost as common as VTs!!

my lfs doesnt even have female bettas (unless i beg my boss to order some) but even then the price is outrageous!

petsmart usually has CT females... so does petco! and i got my double tail from walmart! .... HTH

Yeah, sounds like he didn't know what he was talking about. There are definitely different kinds of females. CT females are easy to tell from VTs cause of their long rays. Plakat females are VERY hard to tell unless you know the lineage of it. I'd defintiely order a HM or CT female if you're looking to spawn them.

The guy doesn't know a thing about Bettas, obviously.

The reason you can't get females is because large breeders don't like to let go of them, because then they have a relative monopoly on the market. Without the right female, there's going to be an "inferior" product, as in a CT x VT cross.

The fin type of the female in breeding is just as important as the fin type of the male.

They just know how to make money on people.    Also petmart have comb female and not crowntail female. :)

I've seen true crowntail females at Petsmart before... and at my local Walmart, but never in large quantities. Like everyone else said, the female is just as important as the male when it comes to breeding. The fry get 50% of her DNA, after all
