Alright, I know I'm going to sound quite dumb in this, but:

Ok, I know what marine or saltwater is, I know what freshwater is, but what exactly is brackish? What are the perimeters on this like?
:blink:

Brackish water is salty. Somewhere in between fresh and marine I do believe. :)

Think of an estury where the river meets the sea that is what the term brackish is reffering to.
Definition of brackish;
[adj] slightly salty
Synonym: briny

brackish is usually classified as a salinity (SG) of anything between fresh water (1.000) and marine (1.022) measured on a hydrometer.

often the water is harder and more alkaline than fresh water

Thanks guys :)

Now what is 'hard' and 'soft' water? Is it the same as acidic and alkaline water? This I understand(minimally..some rememberance of my biology class in HS :D )
but not the 'hard' and 'soft' concept. When it comes to chemistry, I really suck. Maybe I shouldn't keep fishes...maybe I should keep ants or something.. :rolleyes: Although after help from a calculator and a sudden strike of common sense I figured out how many wpg(watts per gallon) I get from my lightbulb, lol.
