I have 4 Columbian catfish that are in a 55 gal with my Angels. I have had one for about a month and the other 3 about 2 weeks. They are still small and I have a little aquarium salt in the tank for health reasons at the moment.

I just read a post that gave me some concern about my catfish. The larger of the 4 stays at the top of the tank in the corner, he is still very active and he eats really well, but since he stays at the top, does that mean that he is ready for a brackish setup? I have a 55 Gal with Mollies and various other fish that can be moved, but the Mollies can stay in brackish, right? I have had these catfish before and they ended up dying on me. I love watching the little guys and I am not against changing a tank to brackish for them.

Since I have never done brackish, I guess my main questions are: How long do I have to get everything changed over? Can my mollies stay in the same brackish tank as the Cats? And most important, Where do I begin to change the tank over??????

Thanks in advance for any help!!! :)

The mollies ca stay with the cats until the cats grow big enough to eat them, which in good conditions will be in 8 months to a year.

Now is the time to switch your tank to brackish, by the time most brackish fish reach the shops they are already semi adults and are ready to begin their migration into saltier water, start by raising the water of their tank to have a SG of 1.005 (you will need a hydrometer to test this) and then slowly increase this by 0.001 each month until it reaches 1.010. Remember it must be marine salt for brackish water not aquarium salt.

Read the pinned topics at the head of this forum for more information on setting up a brackish tank.
