As a newbie I was given advice by my LFS of a range of fish for my new tank set up. I like the Mollies best so came home with a few to get me started. I then started reading up sites and found out they do better with a little salt 1tsp per gallon. So I went back to my LFS who advised they are ok with or without but better with salt. I promptly got the salt and over 3 days added it gradually. They are doing really well and seem very lively but now I am debating about what to do next?

Q. As a newbie is keeping brackish fish harder than freshwater?
Q. Can I reverse the salt that has already been added through water changes?
Q. What other fish could I put with my Mollies if I decide to stick to salted water?

Thank You !

Just adding a little salt doesnt make your tank brackish, to even get the water to register 1.001 on a hydrometer takes several tablespoons of salt per gallon, also aquarium salt is different to marine salt which is used in brackish set ups.

To answer your questions

1) Brackish water is no more difficult than freshwater, it just has a extra parameter to check (the salinity).

2) By doing water changes with just freshwater the salinity will be reduced over time.

3) There are many small gobies and other brackish oddballs that could be housed with mollies.
