Got a Juwel 180 Liter for fresh or brackish puffers, the ones i like most are figure eights which are brackish, and i'd have to buy a hydrometer & protein skimmer so i was thinking is that all id need to keep a marine puffer such as a Porcupine puffer, if so i might aswell go marine. Whats a smaller marine puffer?

Whats a smaller marine puffer?

There isnt any :*)

I have seen green spotted puffers in marine tanks but all the usual marine puffers grow extremly large and will be far too big for a tank of this size :(

But is a protein skimmer all the extra stuff i'd need for marine coming from tropical? What about them box fish, how big do they grow

Most box fish grow between 16 and 20 inches so too big for your tank.

Do a google search on any fish you like the look of, there is loads of info available. When you find something you think may work ask if anyone on here keeps them or has any additional info on them.

Good luck with your search. I would love a long horn cowfish but they get huge. They look so sweet in the shops at about 2 inch long.

Im no expert on brackish water setups im afraid. All i can tell you is that the lower the salinity the less efficient a skimmer becomes. Therefore i would imagine that a skimmer would not be a practical device for your system.

Im afraid that puffers, boxfish, cowfish etc all grow enormous, we all see them in the shops at a couple of inches, unfortunately they dont stay this size. Be wary of any marine fish that the shops sell as they are often very small and many ofhtem grow far far larger than expected.

Protein Skimmers are regarded as being effective after the SG reaches 1.005. Any less than that and the water is too light to create the fine bubbles necessary to extract the DOPs.

Green Spotted Puffers can indeed go into full marine once adult and reach around 6 or so inches.

If you want info on pretty much any puffer and its requirements from brackish or freshwater then try PMing Sirminion.
