boy or girl

i'm assuming you meant that it's the first one, because the other two already have names. if you did mean the first one, he looks like a male plakat to me. he's pretty :)

The yellow one's in the middle, actually...

I don't see a short tail, let alone a plakat, in the lot of them.

I think you are talking about the first one. If that is the case he looks like a vt to me with maybe some fin issues.... but nonetheless it definitely does not look like a plakat to me, which is the only thing I could assume that Petland is talking about.

I believe you hit that nail on the head, Brooke. Those face on photos often have a way of making the tail appear much shorter. It's also possible (nay, likely) that the fish is still young. I found in my spawns that the dorsal and anal grew faster then the caudel, which would usually catch up a bit later. This appears to be the case in this fish.

im new to bettas, i ment the first one, i thought i edited it, i added 2 more pics, i was hoping it was a girl, in west Virginia, i havent saw any. Thanks , Mark

Never trust anything someone at Petland tells you. They're the worst chain on the planet, I'm pretty sure -_-

KeddyPie- I know EXACTLY what you were saying. I was trying to refrain, but since you said it first I will agree. At first I never had any trouble with them, but now I won't hardly go there unless I absolutely have to. They give the worst advice ever, and mostly have no clue what they are talking about.

He looks like a veil tail to me. He might be crossed with something else to make his fins shorter, or like cation said, he might just be young. Either way, he is beautiful  Thanks for sharing.

On a side note, the Petland here is awesome. The manager of the fish department is an avid fish keeper. She calls us MTS sufferers people with tankitis. They keep their fish in excellent condition, their bettas are in 1/2-3/4G tanks. They refuse to sell fish to people who don't know what they are doing, or are already overstocked, etc... They also sell birds, all in open cages, so you can pet them, etc... They have a resident parrot and macaw that bring people in time and time again.

Moral of this story....Don't judge a store by its name. Not all chain stores are the same. I know this from experience. I work for a franchise head office. I can tell you each store varies in it's service to customers. If enough complaints are lodged against a particular franchisee, we will cancel their contract, as they have broken the terms of it. If you are unhappy with a particular franchise(which I think Petland is), I would complain to their head office. They do have rules to follow, unlike big corporations like Walmart, that make their own rules.

Well, it looks like a young veiltail male to me. Check for an ovipositor (white spot on the tummy right behind the ventral fins) just to make sure :)

yea its a she, i did some research and found the ovipositor. thanks for all the help Mark

I will have to try complaining to the head office, because complaining to the store itself does not seem to be doing any good! :grr:

i should rub it in their face , he said i diddnt know what i was talking about, i said if its a different fin type, then where are your half moons, plakats, crowntails, deltas, vieltails, and double tails. and he just staired blankly.ive never saw a girl or any other type of betta in WV besides a vieltail. if anyone knows where i can get another type of betta . PM me. internet doesnt count because our shipping sucks. ive seen them throw boxes with fragile stickers on my porch

Hate to confuse the issue, but many of my boys have what appear to be ovipositors until they are about 5-7 months old. And yes, they turn out male - one is the father of my F2!
