I bought some vallis yesterday and I always wash it before adding to my tank. Well i actually put hot water on it to kill any snails eggs.

Anyway, my b/f had two of the plants, we woke this morning to find alot of his shrimp dead :(

Realised it must be some kind of copper on the plants so removed them, done a massive water change and added carbon to the filter. The amano and the remaining cherries are still alive so hopefully we caught it in time?

Then i went to my house to my tank to find my shrimp - rainbow shrimp and cherry shrimp had both died :( I am gutted as i had never seen these rainbows for sale before and they were lovely :(

I immediately phoned the shop -and explained what had happened. He said they don't add anything to the plants, would call me back after some investigating.

They call me back saying they had tested the water and found no trace of copper  which i find hard to believe, he said perhaps its the lead on the plants, which i didn't add to my tank, i removed and washed. He asked me to bring the dead shrimp in, also can we take a water sample in, I started getting annoyed saying, my water is fine, its your plants!

I am going in to take the sample, I know this is my fault too because i should have quarantine the plants first but i wanted to warn others.

It has taught me a lesson :(

i think just to be on the safe side, you should remove the name of the shop untill you have confirmation that it was copper from the plant tank that killed them, i wouldnt be a happy garden centre owner if i happend across this thread

Sorry to hear about the loss but as shell says removing the name maybe better :good: , i wouldnt have brought anythinks from the shop anyways, dreadful shop and fish arnt exactlty the best.

Don't forget these shops aren't the one's who grow them, they are ordered in, often from abroad. The nursery may have added the copper and the shop didn't check ( which they obviously should )

Well I will be testing the water myself.

I washed the plants but obviously not good enough :(

If you washed the plants I doubt it was copper that killed the shrimps

Well whatever it was it was def from the plants.

Edit: My boyfriend didn't wash his plants
