Bought As An L024

This is a bit of an odd one...

I bought 3 L024 Cactus Flame plecs... all together and they all looked pretty much the same... like L024's...

However one has darkened a lot more than the rest and I'm starting to hope it is actually an L025 Scarlet...

Here are a few pics - they are not great as he's a lively and shy bugger.

what do others think?

Going by the first picture I would of said an L24, the second picture isn't really of much use. The third I would still of said an L24 but been a little less unsure of and the fourth, I would say is definitly an L25....are you sure this is the same fish lol j/k!.

I'm no photo expert but looking at the lighting in the pictures, I would guess that the last picture has the most natural lighting which shows the fishs real colours and it looks most like an L25 to me in that one.

How big is the fish now and is it the same size as the other two still?

yep all 3 are still the same size as each other - about 4" SL.

the 2nd picture was to try and show the bodys darker pigment...

the 3rd is the only one with the flash used...

There is only one of these in this tank - the other 2 are in another tank - so its defiantly the same fish

I've just been out to try and get some better pics... but failed.

Apparently the easy way to tell is the hooded eyes - L24 dont have them L25 do. Colour is variable.

I am just going on what PC say though, never had one myself, although I'd love an L25 one day.

Similar to L024 but with considerably more red colour in the fins and more pronounced black spots. The eyes of L025 are different and give the fish a hooded almost ''evil'' look. Large, monstrously impressive (16''+), individuals have been imported.

Yep - I've looked at the eyes and according to my judgement - there look the same as L025s - but in the same breath all 3 plec's eyes look the same...

Its the bit about more ren in the fins and the dark spots thats got me wondering...

In that first pic, it certainly looks like he has the hooded eyes, and he's definitely got darker/more pronounced spots. I'd say from that pic he was an L25, but I'm really cack at ids (other than commons lol). You can see the one in the last pic doesn't have the hooded eyes though, definitely a big difference between the two.

I whipped all 3 out for a photo session today....

I have an odd feeling i actually have 2 L025s and one L024...

I can now see the "hooded eye" difference.

This is the same fish as above...

you can clearly see the "hood" bit on the top of the eye.

Now... here are the other 2 together...

This is the 2nd one that I think is also an L025

And the 3rd one - L024?...

nice Plecos i think im gunna have a real fish house when im older with about 10 tanks, and 1 defo for plecs this will be in there!! (L025)

yep - when they get big though...

There are some L024's in our local store at the moment - smalled and not as well coloured as these... for £70 a pop.
