Is it alright to put bottled water in my tank for water changes? I give it to my Betta and have been doing so for 4 months. The water I buy is actually tap water that has most things removed. I looked into the system and it gets out ammonium, bacteria, viruses, PH... ect. I actually took a test kit to the store and tested it before I put it in the tank. I want to someday keep an angel in my tank and heard that they like soft water. This water has no hardness, and my tap water is usually unreliable about hardness and PH. Should I continue doing this or stop immediately? :S

Bottled water is an unnecessary expense. If your water is safe to drink it's safe for fish. Hardness stabilizes pH, if you have soft water, especially with a zero hardness reading, you are going to have some nasty pH swings. I breed angels in tap water, pH 7.7, gH 190, kH 107, tds 210. Add some Prime to take care of chlorine & chloramine, and it's good to go.

Domestically bred angels can easily acclimate to nearly any water parameter within reason, they do need plenty of fresh water to thrive. If you get well bred angels, and change 30% to 50% of the water weekly they should do great.

Thanks so much. The reason I was using it was because it seemed so clean and healthy for them. I will use my tap water from now on.

Be sure to use a de-chlorinator additive when using tap water. The chlorine in tap water is one thing that we can drink that fish can not!

Fish can drink it, but the nitrifying bacteria that supports them are killed by it.

I add half bottled half tap water because my tap water is pretty hard, it does the job for me giving me softer water which my fish may benefit from. Although it may well be an unnecessary expense it makes me feel happier having the hardness I want. Its up to you, I have been doing it for 6 months and the only side effect I can see is that my kh is low (I add bicarbonate soda to raise this). But I am probably just wasting my money lol.
