Both Tubes Out

Hi,
I am after a bit of advice. I have a fluval duo tank with a fluval hood. Both of the tubes have gone in the hood which I find a little strange. However looking at the wiring it looks as though the tubes are wired in series which would mean that if one tube went, then neither would light up. Is this right or am i barking up the wrong tree.

Quite a common arrangement ! Best way to tell if you DO need both tubes, or just one is to buy a pair of bog standard white tubes for testing, from an electrical retailer/hardware store, they only cost about a pound each, and will save a lot of headaches !

have you tryed twisting the bulb so the contacts meet properly usually the main reason i get the hoods back at work?
