I'm a newbie but I've caught the puffer bug big time. Although there is tons of excellent advice in this forum, i was wondering if anyone could recommend a book on selecting and keeping puffers?

Have searched Amazon and the usual suspects with no luck.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Sarah :p

I think that, since puffers are relatively new to the aquarium, there are not many books out there with information about them. There are a lot of varied opinions of the classification and proper care of them.

That said, I'm sure there are some good books out there. I haven't found any yet, though, sorry. There is a lot of great information online, though, and some of it is from reputable sources. Just be careful who's word you take.

I have a small but useful puffer book, it is as follows:

Practical Fishkeeping
Pufferfish
By: Chris Ralph
Publishers: Ringpress books, (part of Interpret Publishing).

Hope this helps, I found it in my local(ish)fishstore (lfs)

It has info on the basic anatomy, water conditions/housing, food common diseases, breeding and species!!!!

Hope this helps!!!!!!

The definitive book on fresh and brackish puffers is the Aqualog The Puffers of Fresh and Brackish Waters by Dr Klaus Ebert. (ISBN: 3-931702-60-x)

It really is very good and informative.

We bought ours from here.

Cool, thank you SirM. Will have to wait until next week for that one - can't believe how much money I'm spending on fish stuff when i haven't even got any fish yet!

:D

Minion, that looks like a very informative book. I wish I could get one in Canada, but I don't think that site allows international users. Dang...

Tor, Amazon.co.uk has it (and they allow international buyers) but it's listed as 6 week availability. If you want, I can get it from SirM's recommended site and send it to you, if you Paypal me the money? It wouldn't be a hassle, I post stuff all over the place.

Let me know

Sarah

WoooooHoooOOOOO - couldn't sleep last night so was playing on Ebay - put bids in on 2 tanks not thinking I'd get either - got BOTH!!! So I'll soon have a puffer tank!!!!! The bigger one is 10gallons UK - if I planted it well and gave them some caves etc, could I fit more than 1 puffer in if I went for dwarfs? I'm too much of a newbie for brackish I think, so what others would go in a little tank?

(So excited!!)

Sarah :D

PS the book is £24.99 on Amazon, but as I said - 6 weeks - :(

Only dwarfs I'm afraid, you can have a couple in there and maybe a trio of ottos or one of the small species of ancistrus for algae duty.
