does anyone know of a book on filtration that not only deals with the bio chemical and mechanical filtration but also how to calculate flow rates etc

ie

i might want to build a filter how do i work out flow down to the sump area and then flow rate back up assuming it had to rise 1m etc and what diameter pipes and what flow through such pipes?

i have lots of books with filtration in including a complete authoritive guide to aquarium filtration (take note its only a basic guide)

i am looking for a book with the maths etc inside

any help greatly appreciated as always

There are few different books on styles of filtration. Most will focus on a certain theme (such as Algae Turf Scrubbing) and go other different ways of accomplishing the desired effects.

The flow down is governed by the flow back up from the return pump. When all pumps are off the display tank is in equilibrium. By pumping water from the sump to the display tank the water will overflow over a weir and drain down to the sump.

The effects of head on flow rate will differ between each pump, so you need to look at the flow vs head curve for any of the pumps you are considering. As for drain capabilities, I seem to recall that 25mm pip can cope with up to around 1,500 to 2,000 LPH. After that you need to step up. I always massively over engineer my drains as a safety margin.

I did once find an internet site that had full details of maximum flow through a pipe including how bends affect the rate. Can't find it now for the life of me. It is all a bit more than necessary. Most people advise minimum pipe diameters with a good degree of safety built in, just in case.
