Morning All, After my Blonde guppy giving birth a week ago i started them off on Liquifry which they took with no probems, over the course of the week they are now quite happily taking BBS and crused flake. My question is can i safely introduce the yolk from a Boiled Egg, i read somewheres that it is packed with protien ? I know this will cloud up the water so only a little at a time will be fed as they are at the moment still in a breeding net. I will hopefully be setting up a rearing tank for them today, 24x15x12 with a tank divider in as i'm due another birth shortly so effectively they'll have 12x15x12.

This is a very old method but it works.
Take the yolk from a hard boiled egg and place it in a cotton hankie
and squeeze into the fry tank but remember to waterchange and keep things clean

Hi Fishian :)

Welcome to the forum. :hi:

Feeding eggs to fry is useful in cases where very fine food is needed to start tiny fry out. These days we have LiquiFry and Hikari First Bites which are readily available and provide excellent nutrition for them.

Boiled egg yolk is even more messy than LiquiFry and if your fry is already past that stage, I would advise you to avoid the trouble and risk that's involved in using it. Even tiny bits that settle on the bottom of the tank will go moldy in a short time.

Same as the other's yes u can and for tiny fry like gourami's and betta's it handy in very small doses.
If you feeding BBS (with in 48 hours of hatching) then you don't need egg yolk what so ever as BBS is a complete diet for guppies and need no other foods.

Years ago when Baby Discus were imposable to raise unless hand fed we use powdered egg yolk and dabbed it on the sides of bowls. .Warning egg yoke will quickly contaminate your tank.

As a body builder i can tell you that Egg White is the protien source and the yolk is the fat source.....not that it really matters for fish lol :p

Just throwing it out there...i eat 3 egg whites (cooked) every morning and the 3 yolks go in the bin :p

This has turned into an interesting topic. I'll move it to Tropical Discussion and see if anyone else has experience with this. :D

When I was raising bettas I used to use egg yolk. It's absolutely true that it spoils really fast, and any leftovers should be siphoned out immediately.

When I hatch out a bunch of rainbow eggs, I use Hikari First Bites as the first food followed 2 days later by vinegar eels and finally to baby brine shrimp. Rainbow fry are extremely small and can only accept the tinyest of foods once they have hatched. Definately not the easiest fry to raise.

I've fed boiled yolk to fry occasionally, I like live food cultures better though. My fish love scramble eggs though. I feed it occasionally as a treat.

I tried it out...gave some of my yolk left over from my mornign eggs to my fish...the silver dollars went mad for it but it made a real bad mess!

Fed the rest to the cats :p lol.... who also made a mess...

Ditch the egg yolk methodology and use/culture livefoods.
