hi i recently brought some nice bogwood to add to my tank and iv been boiling it over nigt and when i checked the colour of the water this morning the water was still clear, how long does it take for the colour to come out as i want the brown water in my tank?

It wont take long but if the wood has already been soaked for a long period of time then it may release little to no tannins at all. Also, the wood wont release tannins forever, I have a large piece in my tank that made the water very dark for about 3 months and now it's back to clear water.

Boiling the wood will only encourage it to break down and rot. If you want to remove the tannins, the best way to do so is by soaking it in room temperature water and changing the water regularly. But as someone said above, if the water is already not changing colour, it's unlikely to release tannins.

thanks for the replies the guy in the shop didnt say it was already pre soaked but if it doesnt turn should i just buy more bogwood or should i just put that blackwater stuff from tetra or is there another way of turning the water dark.

Wait a second.. are you boiling the wood to get the tannins out so that you can add the tannins to the tank, so the water goes blackwater? Not to "prepare" the wood so it doesn't taint the water?

Also, if it's driftwood instead of bogwood, that would explain why it didn't leach tannins.

But the easiest way to add tannins to the water is to add Indian almond leaves (IAL) or oak leaves into the tank, or prepare the new water for water changes by soaking leaves in that.. If you go collecting dead leaves, make sure that they're not from a polluted area.
