how long should i soak bogwood to get the tanin out? i have soaked it in boiling water for about 5 hours

5 Hours. Try 5 months.

Boiling and soaking it will help but it will still release a certain amount of tannin for a long time. But with water changes it will get less and less noticable. The tannins aren't actually harmful and would be present in fishes natural enviroment. Some people even like the look the tannins give.

I never had any in mine from PetCo

Lol ive had mine in foe over 2 yrs and it still leaches. Mind you i like the look,it give a natural look to the tank.If you dont like the tannins you can up the water changes or add active carbon to your filter to remove the colouring(not advisable on a planted tank though as it removes other nutrients)

how is that possible? all driftwood/bogwood releases tannin...unless its coated in a resin

I don't know about where you are, but here you can buy the ready soaked stuff.

I've got three medium sized bits in my tank and any water discolouration, and there was only a tiny bit, cleared up after 1 / 2 water changes.

and the ready soaked doesnt release ANY tannin huh? even though it is constantly breaking down in the tank throughout the months/years?

Of course it does, I already stated that. It just wouldn't be noticeable compared to the un-soaked wood.

well i just didn't understand why in one post you say it will leech for 5 months and the next you say that you can buy pre-soaked in response to my statement that it will leech no matter what...

i guess it all depends on a lot of things, including tank inhabitants - do they chew the wood -, size of tank, and size/amount of driftwood on how much discoloration you will notice (even in the pre-soaked)

I can't believe I'm explaining myself over a lump of wood but here goes. Five months wasn't an exact time period, merely saying it would be longer than the five hours to completely rid the wood of it's tannins.

Then someone said that their's never any on it, I take it to mean tannins. It was a suggestion that their's could have been pre-soaked, therefore they would never have noticed any discolouration. :)

I had one peice that let out a tiny bit, but the other 3 didnt do anything.

And I also have this big one, that was used, but this is that holey stuff that floats because it need sthe slate, that didnt realse anything either
