Bog Wood...

im thinking about going out and collecting some wood...

question 1: the wood needs to be dead? so would chopping a branch of a dead standing tree work well?
question 2: what types of wood are suitable. i was thinking about using oak but im unsure
question 3: how long would a bit normally take to sink and would boiling (or heating to a highish temp) then soaking it speed up the process?

I do it all the time and never had a problem with it. It should be fine if it's already dead. I use boiling water and the shock it in a bucket of cold water after it's been in the hot one for a bit. If you can get some shale (rock) it drills with a regular drill bit to screw the wood to as well.
