Hi, I had perchased a albino BN Plec a while back, I think it was about 5 quid for a small one , I think I might have paid about 10 for him and he was maybe 3 - 4 inches long and full of colour. Lately I have seen them and its 6/7 for a juvi and 15 for an adult, another shop has natural ones and its 4/5 for a juvi and 13 quid for adult, subadult.
Would there be any reason for this, are they seasonal so just not as many avaliable ?
Any correspondence greatly appreciated :good:

Ive always wondered why BN are quite expensive but one of if not the easiest plec to sex and breed. Im not complaining though because it means i get £2.49 each for 1" fry that i sell to my lfs. There not seasonal mine breed every 3 weeks no mater what time of year. Longfins and other new variates are alot more expensive because there still arnt enough around to make the price drop.

Just wondered as they same to have jumped in price here, I have even seen some really tiny ones in the shops here, 4quid in one shop and over 6quid in another, 13quid sound expensive for an adult/sub-adult?

I have long fin bn's,- standard colour and albinos. I have no idea on how much shops charge for them, but I know that they don't pay for the juveniles around here! I give all my (many!) juveniles to my lfs. My bn's all came via local breeders on e-bay. The difference in price was ridiculous though. I was a complete newbie to bn's and had no idea how much they cost. I saw a listing for the long fins and thought they looked gorgeous on the you tube ad. I paid £15 each for a pair of long fins, plus a standard fin albino female. My longfin albino females only cost me £20 for 7 of them,- 4" long each!

Tank in LFS was empty , dunno if all sold or something happened, they had a starlight £20.00 and a marbled £15.00 , they were both about 3", other LFS that had the larger ones had just added new stock to the tank (cichids) and they looked in bad shape so as yet no new BN added to the tank
Whats the minimum size tank for a pair ?
:fish:

For a pair on there own i would say you want a tank atleast 2 foot long. 15G would be good there normally 2x1x1. If you go for a tank that size you will need another tank as a grow out. About 30-40G would be perfect for the pair and there fry.

Cheers for the quick answer....
Might be a bit tight then, 20 gallon long, has some small cichlids in , maybe just be best with the lazy male , did fancy a wee girl in there as well, love plecs.... :good:

If there in with cichlids it should be ok because they might eat most of the fry so you wont get loads.

LOL
That's a mad answer, they ate there own fry , serious bad fish but cool, still tempted, if I can ask one question ?
Just out of your own experience do you find the female BNs more active than the males ?

Not really. Ive never noticed a difference between sex some are active some arnt no mater what sex IME. I have noticed that younger BNs are alot more active than ones thy gat older.

Maybe that's what it was then, I had 2 juvi BN a while back now and they were constantly all over the place, fun to watch. I have a male Albino(very yellow) and he just hides in his cave, big lazy bones, that's why I was asking , thought a "girlfriend" might perk him up a bit

Haha. They are normally alot more active when young but ones they get to about 4" they just hide and eat lol. It might perk him up a little my males happy with his 2 girls lol
