hi i want to look into buying a pair of BN plecs to breed from has anyone got any tips on first of all how to sex them on purchase and also the water stats i need to make it perfect to carry out?

males get bigger and have big bristles on the nose hence the name and females are smaller fatter and have few if any bristyles and if they do have any there alot smaller. you cant tell untill there about 2" though so if you can only find small ones it might be worth buying 5 and letting them pair up. my ph is 6.5 and the water temp is 24 and mine spawned 1 month ago and im pretty sure they are going to breed again tonight. bns adapt to most temps and phs.

ok any chance of pics of of you male and felmale so i can see what u mean ?

great thanks i really want to start breeding these so what other fish wouldn't i be able to put in the tank and also how many male to female ratio do i need ??

most fish dont bothen bn fry. Have a look at the socking for my 30g in my sig they dont bother my bns my male is guarding a load of eggs that where laid last night. I wouls go for a trio 1m 2f or maby more females. iw would only keep 1m unless its a big tank or the males will fitght and you risk them eating each others eggs.

thats great thanks very much for all your help!!

You can sex them from about 1.5"-2" and as Kizno said, they are quite easy to sex.
Depends on the size of the size of the tank as to how many you should keep in there. One male and one female would be absolutely fine, two males may fight if there isn't enough cover.
Make sure you have somewhere to rehome/sell them if they do breed, otherwise you may become overrun with them. :good:

thanks i spoke to my local lfs and they have agreed a price and with me and said they will take upto 50 a month so not too bad but they have to be 6 weeks old which is cool

just need to find some adults to buy as nowere local sells them so will have to be online i think

Where abouts are you? i have some fry you can have if your local there just inder 1". Most lfs take them when they get to about 1" which is about 6 weeks. mine are 5 and my bns alredy have another load of eggs.

am in devon
you?

i am coming to visit my family in the next few days up on the wirral!

you may want to seek out more fish stores....
getting rid of 50 a month won't move enough fast enough for you....you will probably have hundreds of fry so you should really hold off on breeding attempts unless you know you can home them.

once you have that taken care of - - good luck! and keep us posted on the fry with a journal :hyper:

found this what are peoples thoughts!!
