Guys,

Got home from work last night, to find my female BN Plec on the bottom of the tank, belly up and stiff as a board.... :-( :byebye:

Noticed when I was fishing her out in the net that her belly was really swollen.

Possibly an internal parasite?

Bought 3 x L059/L180's just over a week ago, and I reckon they might have been carrying a parasite which has infected my resident BN :( My own fault I know, I should have quarantined them before putting them in my community tank, but I don't have a quarantine tank.

Would have taken a pic to aid the diagnosis, but the girlfriend was freaking out, so I had to get rid of it asap.

If anyone's got any ideas about the cause od death, or any recommendations for what to do next... please let me know.

Cheers,

Andy

sorry to hear about your BN Andy, was it one of the newly introduced fish that died, or one of the introduced ones? i lost several (4) oto's from the shop in the middle of newton abbot with only symptom being a swollen belly, didnt ever find out the cause though

It was one of my resident Teminicki ones :(

She was my breeding Female to !! Only had 1 spawn off her, and was planning on more.....

Looks like I'll be on the hunt for a new female or two......

nightmare. No other signs before she died then, white stringy poo or anything? Thats usually a sign of internal parasites isnt it?

Now you mention it, there was some 'white-stringy' poo in the tank a couple of days ago....

Should have spotted it really ! :(

might be worth dosing the tank with an anti internal bacteria med just in case then i guess? just as a preventative measure? I used it after my otos died just in case, think it was interpet number 9 that i used

gutted mate..

We'll help you out. we've got a couple of larger (1.5") females (hopefully) in our main tank - you can have one of them as you go home.

are the new ones showing any signs?

We've never had a problem with them spreading - it's normally just on fish that dies :(

It could have been an internal problem with eggs... If she was holding on to them because of the newcommers. how long ago was the last spawn?

The last spawn was the first one I had, about 2-3months ago :(

Haven't seen any signs from the newbies yet....

Maybe the stress of the 3 newbies made her hold onto the eggs as you've said..... :-(

Have just applied the first dose of Interpet No. 9.... 4 days til the next dose

There was definitely white stringy poo in the tank a couple of days ago, but I couldn't tell if it was from her or one of the others....

See how things go from here....

Update on the situation:

Got home from work last night, and found my male BN belly up on the bottom of the tank..... :byebye: :byebye: :-( :-(

This time, there were no signs of any white stringy poo, and he appeared to be eating ok. When I had a look at him, there were no visible signs of a sunken belly etc.

The 3 White Seams which were in my tank until Friday last week, have all gone up to smithrc's place. He's going to keep an eye on them and see if they exhibit any signs of sickness etc.

Checked my water param's last night: Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate <5.

Will check pH and KH tonight, but I doubt these would be the cause.

All of my other fish seem to be ok. Including the 5/6 platty fry which are about 2-3mm long !! :flex:
