Hi all, for weeks, I've been trying to distinguish the sexes of my BN's. They have not shown much signs of actually growing any bristles on their face. However, i have recently noticed that one of the BN's has bravely and boldly over powered 2 clown loaches (2.5 inches) out of their homes in one of Russel's breeding caves, and has kept it for itself. This plec is about 2.5 inches. I have another plec which is never in a cave, it is about 2-2.25 inches. They were both the same size when i bought them.

Based upon that, would you agree with me on that there is 1 male and 1 female.

No, at that size (provided its accurate) i would expect you to be able to see bristles, at least the start of them if you had a male.

2 females would be my guess

some males are late devolpers try and get him close to the glass as you can and you should see little bristles on the top lip if not as mike said 2 females

cheers dane

Thanks All. He's been hiding in the cave for 2 days now. and in those 2 days, HE's, YES HE'S developed bristles. Dont suppose anyone believes me now lol, but has anyone else heard of their bristles growing overnight?

I'm wondering about the sex of my BN too. It's got some tiny bristles growing around its lips, but that's all so far. I'm hoping it turns out to be a male because I think the large bristles look very cool! It's pretty aggressive to other fish when there's food around. It's got a really fat wide head though so I'm not sure whether it might be female. I guess all I can do is wait...

When I got it it was smaller than my corydoras, now its probably 1.5x the size of them. How much bigger should it be before I know for sure?

i got 2 tiny ones and now the (certified) male doubled in size and the females just reaching 1.5 inches from the original 1 inch in length
