Hi all. Just wondering if anybody has been breeding this fish and if they were successful or not, how many fry they have and any other things you can tell me for advice. Cheers
They are pretty much the same as any standard platy, the only difference from other mickey mouse platys is their coloring. You should have at least 2-3females per male in a mixed gender group although the more females the better- the average pregnancy takes about 4weeks and females can produce up to 40+ fry.
As you can see, platys can breed on a very regular basis and you can easily become over run with fry, so you need to figure out how much space you have in your tank to raise fry to the half grown stage- you also need to find out before you actually breed your platys, wether you will have anywhere that will take the fry off you when you get too many for your tank.
Alot of livebearer keepers will set up a fry tank for raising the fry, which is usually about 10gals+ and will need heating and filtration.
How many gallons is your current tank and what and how many fish does it have ?
I bought a pair in the spring and now I have 11! They live in a community tank where the fry have to take their chance but a few seem to survive every time.
I have the 20 litre just for the fry, all the others are in the 52 litre till the big one comes. I wil keep all the fry and wil sell them when i get to many
Okay. 20litres is pretty small, so you won't be able to keep all that many in there at once. Maybe about 8-10 newborns, and after that the number keeps going down as they get bigger. I'm guessing you'll be moving them over to the bigger tank pretty soon after birth?
So you found a store that will pay for them? Lucky devil.
