hi all, am researching getting a blue marron for an empty 10 gall that is going to waste. have researched basic needs and concluded:

mainly vegetarian, however opportunistic omnivore.
require at least 30-40cm square footprint.
require cave or hollow log for retreat.
pref. no tankmates.
leave shell in water after moulting for reclamation of minerals.

so, if i put a single blue marron in my empty 10 gall long, with an air driven sponge filter and a largish hollow log that is massively covered with too much java moss (on upper surface only), that is good, yes?

feed (according to web research) celery/carrot/pumpkin/aquatic plants/crayfish pellets, and rare bloodworm treats. feed a small portion every second day.

can i add (very small underdoses) of liquid ferts to tank to stop java moss being utterly destroyed in first week?

has anyone kept blue marron or similar crays and have any advice to offer?

TIA, merry.

well you really have done your research, nice work merry78.

all seems fine to me, a few pointers though:

1, try to add more than one cave/hide. i would normally suggest three, of varying sizes.

2, make sure you have enough O2, though with a air sponge filter, this will be had. without adding some form of diffuser. this filter would not be my choice, that said i have no reason to suggest you change.

3, ferts will not help your moss most, if not all, live plants get mashed up quick time. thess guys dig/burrow too.

4, i would suggest giving the bloodworm a miss. they are too full of fat for cray. and can also suffer from bacterial problems. this is not much of a problem for fish, but Crayfish are prone to these type of infection.
there is no real need to feed on a daily basis, every other day will do.

5, oddly the reason for the Cray eating its shell has noting to do with minerals. Cray get all their calcium from the water around them. its the organic section of the carapace that the cray is after. the stuff that holds the calcium together. just about all the calcium in the shell prior the the cast. is removed.

the clicking in my siggy may help.
