Was he a full adult when you received him; or still a child ?

Ideally Betta splendens can live for 4 or 5 years. However, due to the number of diseases found in Asian fish farms, their life expectancy is around 2-3 years. Most adult fish sold in shops are 6-12 months of age so you might get 1-2 more years.

It's unlikely your fish died from old age and more likely it has a disease.
What symptoms did it have before it died?
How long was if unwell for?

He was laying on the bottom not eating or responding and he died last night

If he was eating and acting normally one day, then you wake up the next day and he's on the floor breathing heavily and not eating, it's usually an internal problem (either internal organ failure or an internal bacterial infection that has damaged an organ causing it to fail). In these circumstances (unexplained death) it's a good idea to give the tank a good clean before adding new fish.

If there are other fish in the tank, do a 75% water change and gravel clean the substrate every day for a week. This will dilute any disease organisms in the water and reduce the chance of them catching something (assuming it is contagious). You can clean the filter too if it hasn't been done in the last 2 weeks.
