first post on here. been a browser for a while. now i need some help though. so i registered.

me and my gf have a 5 gallon tank in our bedroom. temp stays around 75*, and it has a filter on it.

we had an algae eater. 2 glo tetras (the genetic altered ones), 3 blue fin tetras (thats what they were if i remember correctly), and 3 red eyed tetras.

well about a week ago. one of our glo tetras. started shrinking. it was really weird looking. hed eat. but his body looked shriveled. and his neon color all went away. well last night my gf noticed he finally died.

well at the same time. she noticed our biggest blue fin tetra, was swollen. hes huge. belly is very bloated. and it has a weird looking film like look all over him. although hes swimming around and acting ratehr normal.

our tank has recently become over grown with hair algae also. weve cut down on the light for th etank since. since we havent really ahd time to clean it out since we noticed it. but it keeps growing like crazy.

what could be wrong with our blue fin tetra? are the other fish in danger? is it also what our glo tetra died from? does that nasty looking hair algae growing everywhere have anything to do with it?

i dont have any pics. i tried taking a pic of the tetra, but they all came out horrible. i do have a small 10 sec vid of it though that came out decent. im uploading it now and will post a link as soon as its hosted.

any and all help is appreciated :)

yes. his scales are sticking straight out along his belly where its bloated. some may have even fallen off. is there anything i can do? are the other fish at risk?

thanks for the reply

Dropsy : One of the most disturbing of fish diseases, and is rarely cureable. Dropsy is an internal bacterial infection.

Symptoms: The fish's scales will stand out, making it have a pine comb look. Sometimes eyes can .blow up'.

Treatment : Use Kanamycin or Tetracycline and raise the temperature to about 80 degrees/ 30 deg C. This helps remove the fluid note this is rarly curablee.

sorry to hear about your fish :( i wish you the best of luck!, and i hope this helps
