About two months ago I bought a fish from my LFS that was labeled as a "Blue Dolphin." The guy at the store said it was very rare fish from Asia so I couldn't pass up the chance to get one. It turns out the guy was right because I can't seem to find anything about my new fish. So far it's been doing very well in our community tank but I'd still like to find out anything I can about it.

It's about 4 inches long and looks almost like a Great White Shark to me (even though I think it might be a Mormyrid). It's skin looks very smooth (it's hard to tell it has scales) and is blue on top and gray underneath. It has a large mouth that is always open and it has very small eyes, almost like it's blind. He's a very active fish and a voracious eater (I've seen him eat 5 small goldfish in under 10 minutes).

If you know anything about this fish please let me know. Thanks for your help!
Oh, and any info on how to post a video would be greatly appreciated...it's just too hard to get a still shot of my new fish. Thanks again.

From the description a Cetopsid catfish was my first guess too, nasty fish!!!

If it's the dolphinfish I'm thinking of, it is a Mormyrid. Mine got quite aggressive, hogging 3/4 of my 90g with all the other fish quivvering at the other end.

Yeah, it's definitely a Cetopsid catfish. So are these guys bad news...anything I should know about them? It seems ok for now but should I worry when it gets bigger? Thanks for your help.

These fish are serious bad news!! What they can't eat they will tear chunks off of and if the fish is large enough they will burrow into its flesh and eat it from the inside out, non conspecific tankmates are a absolute NO for obvious reasons. They get to about 10 inches so a standard 4 foot long tank will be large enough to keep a single one, though ideally they should be kept in groups as they are a schooling fish.

They had these in an LFS near my Mum and Dad's place in Devon..... no warning about them or anything :(

was that at jacks patch, andy? yeah i saw them and wondered what they were...

weren't they on a documentary recently, being filmed from some kind of rv? if it was the ones i was thinking of they showed a carcass being eaten from the inside out as CFC mentioned

Hi Chris,

How's things down in Sunny Devon mate ?!? Seen my fish lately ?!? ;)
