Always thought they were filter feeders as well as scavengers, but cant find confirmation.

Am I correct in my assumption or..?

Crayfish are in fact fairly herbivorous in the wild, eating decaying plant material as well as carrion. They're opportunistic though, and things like fruits, fish eggs, snails and so on will be part of their diet depending on the season. In captivity they'll eat almost anything, but supplying iodine in the form of marine aquarium iodine supplement (at half the normal dose) seems to dramatically improve their health, esp. with regard to moulting.

Cheers, Neale

I have Iodine for my lobsters but have not added it yet as I was nervous of potential harm to other fish and had not been able to ask any one yet. Can that be an issue os will they be fine (mollies, guppys, snails, feeder comets, tetras.) Sorry to dive into teh thread but since you mentioned the Iodine I thaught I would ask.

It's perfectly safe to use marine aquarium iodine in a freshwater aquarium. Shouldn't harm your fish at all. Of course, you shouldn't be keeping crayfish with fish, so strictly speaking, this is a non-issue…

Cheers, Neale
