I brought a very nice helmet ornament .....but my female gourami got his head stuck.....I quickly got a pair of pliers and broke it open and got her out.....what a nightmare....shes a bit bruised but I hope she'll be ok....

I had the exact same problem with my male Dwarf Gourami. He swam into a hole that got smaller at the other end and got stuck. Took my an hour to get him out and he has scars and missing part of his doral fin for the rest of his life.

He seemed fine aprt from this but it is scary. :X

poor thing, im glad you managed to free her & she seems to be ok. i read on a post not that long ago of someone who lost a tiger barb only to find it dead stuck in a shell ornament. all the other barbs had been pointing their noses at the shell for a couple of days but the poor barb wasnt discovered till it was too late. we've got a yoyo who took to moving into our internal filter outlet(we were using till we got a better external filter) & we only realised he was going there when i spotted him lying with his nose peaking out of it one day!!! i suppose fish are a bit like kids - if it looks like they'll fit they'll try it :)

I hate it when fish get stuckin ornaments. All my ornaments have not got small holes where a fish can get stuck so I check before I buy.

I have very little in the way of ornaments in my two 10 gal tanks at this time. I do appreciate the warnings here!! I will certainly be careful of what I choose in the future!

I never had any problems with stuff like that. But about two months ago I noticed one of my fish missing. A week before that one of my Red wag plattys got sucked up the filter tube and chopped up... :-( . Like I was saying. My Black skirt tetra was gone. I freaked out. I ripped the filter cord out of the wall. Ran into the bathroom and poured the filter water into the sink. Nothing came out. I looked into the filter and my fishy was stuck in by the blade. I shook it a little and he came out. He was swimming on his side and the inside of his eyes were bloody. I put some tank water in a medium size jar and put my fish in it with strees coat and air bubbles. I prayed he would get better. I kept him in the jar for an hour and put him back in the tank. After a day he was swimming fine and two weeks the blood in his eyes were gone. Now he still has a small black spot on the bottom inside his eyes but he is healthy and happy. Sometimes I wonder if he is thankful that I helped him and saved his life.

This is true it REALLY did happen.

Yep, that was me. I,ve since removed all the sea shells and replaced them with driftwood and plants, heaps of plants. The fish love the plants and feel more secure with them. The driftwood has no holes in it only long branches which all the fish in my tank can swim through. No more shells for me, they,re traps for fish.

I haven't had this problem with decorations, yet. And hopefully I won't, but my pleco favours a fake driftwood decoration and he is growing fast. I'm scared that some day he won't be able to get out. I'm going to build him a little cave out of a fish bowl that is about 2gallons. I hope he'll adopt it as his new home. I might not even put the fake driftwood back into the tank so he has no choice but to find somewhere else to live. Is that mean? I don't want to be mean  And then I'll have to figure something out for when he gets even bigger, he's a sailfin plec.

my largest angel fish got stuck in a log and couldnt get out.
Thankfully my brother was home to help him.
He got the net and pushed him out the other end.
He didnt go in there again

my kissin g got stuck behind my heater last night upside down, i didnt notice untill i saw my mollie attacking my plant next to it (as stated in another post my molly only attacks a certain plant in the tank) but last night it was attacking this plant next to the heater and thats how i noticed.... put it one way that lids never come off so quick! lol
