Bought 2 what are supposed to be female bloodred swords but they both look like males. No gravid spot and don't look like have ever been bred. Whats your opinions?

It looks like the front anal fin is a gonopodium, but usually males have a long sword on the top part of the tail (although that part of the pic is cut off). This fish looks very lean, though, (something I have observed in most male fish compared to females) and that combined with the anal fins makes me think it's a male.

Think again everyone

It's a lyretail swords, this gene exaggerates all the edges of the fins.

That is a female lyretail red eye red swordtail. 100%
Look at the anal fin, it's rounded if u ignore the first ray. males still have a gonopodium structure but are exaggerated in length making them impossible to breed.

You been to breed this with a normal red eye red male, if it's not carrying the lyretail gene you only get short fin fry but all will have the gene so the F2's will then produce some lyretails.

I must agree with HelterSkelter. That is a very nice looking female that is carrying the lyretail trait. If you cross her with a top quality male of the right color, you will get some nice males from the F2 generation. Darrel Mefford brought some nice examples of that fish to the ALA convention in Indy. Is that where you picked it up?

Oh! I didn't now that! It looks sorta female-ish, but....
Something new every day, I guess. :good:

Female. See how you can see rays in the anal fin? This wouldnt' be seen in a male. Here is a male (photo off aquabid, it is not mine, I think it's tropicalfishdistributors.)
