I have recently rescued two blood parrots that were abandoned at the store I work at. I was planning to set up a semi-aggresive community in a 33 gallon before I got them, and would like to still go ahead with this. My plan, if it's acceptable, was to put the Blood Parrots into the 33 gallon and build the semi-aggresive community around them for now. They are 2 inches and 4 inches.

I will be moving them to a larger tank within a year. I wasn't expecting to get them, but they had nowhere else to go.

What types of fish, preferably ones that will be able to stay in that tank for their whole life, can live with them? I was hoping to had a few yellow lab cichlids, because a friend has a neglected one in a five gallon that I was hoping to adopt.

Would an albino rainbow shark be ok? Striped Raphael?

Give me some ideas! :hey: :D

It would depend on the personality of your parrots. Some are really aggressive, while some are ok with small fish.

They seem pretty mellow to me. They are in with five zebra danios and a long finned blue danio for dither fish, and they haven't gone after them at all. They spend most of their time pushing sand around and blowing it at eachother. haha. And pushing the plastic plants and airstones into less-then-attractive places! Oh well! haha. It's their house, guess they can redecorate as they please. :p

I don't think I would add anything else if the tank is 33g. Maybe wait until you get a larger tank to add some friends.

Well, the danios aren't going into the 33 gallon with them, they're going into a ten gallon newt tank. I wanted some smaller fish that I don't have yet as dither fish in the 33.

I have a 75 gallon I could use, but I can't afford the filtration for it right now. Is there any handy DIY filters I could use to compliment a powerfilter or something? I'm a 16 year old petstore employee, my budget is streeeetched. :/ I was thinking maybe a huge DIY sponge filter, but I'm not sure if that's possible :*)

Again, I know that I sound irresponsible taking on fish that I don't have the optimum amount of room for...but someone set them adrift in the stores Koi Pond, so I really had no choice. Nobody else wanted them! :dunno:

Double Post! :p

I've decided to do something different.

My ball python is in a 75 gallon, white's tree frogs in a 33 gallon, Parrots in a 20 gallon, and I have a spare wooden and screen cage and an empty 55 gallon with a crack.

I'm going to fix up the cage and move my python into it. The Tree frogs are going to be stuck into the 55 gallon with a ten gallon tank as a "pond" and a nursery for swordtails inside of it. The parrots will be put into the 75 gallon, and the 33 gallon will be empty for future endevours :D Sound good?

Now comes the problem of setting up the 75 gallon. I was thinking of buying an aquaclear power head for 80 gallon, and making a Corner filter out of an icecream pail and such. I'll spend the money on a new heater, unless someone can come up with a cheaper DIY option that I haven't heard about, and make a ghetto stand out of ciderblocks and 2x4's. Canadian Tire has a 48inch flourescent light fixture on sale for 12 bucks and lightbulbs for it, specifically for growing plants and illuminating fish! Hurrah!

Does this sound good? It's my cheapest option, I think.

What are some good 75 gallon tankmates?

Severums go well with parrot cichlids... Convicts are aggressive but usually can be kept with parrots as well. I keep all sorts of cichlids with my parrots.

What about Jewel cichlids, and Yellow Labs? A friend is not taking proper care of his yellow lab, so I thought I'd take it off his hand's if it's compatible.

I have jewels with my ps and theyre ok. I don't know about yellow labs.. I have a few of them, but not with my parrots. I guess its possible if you have a few of them.. I think they like being in groups, and would probably be safer if the parrots aren't thrilled seeing them.

Hey,

I don't know, I've read a lot about the Jewels and everyone says they are insanely aggresive. Have you seen this in your Jewels? I love the looks of them, but eh....I don't want to have to deal with huge wounds and the guilt if one of my fish gets hurt! I kind of want larger fish that are also relatively peaceful, so I can have an aggresive or semi aggresive community of large fish. I'll tell you what I bought....

A double 48" strip light with two 40W bulbs meant for planted aquariums and fish that I bought from Canadian Tire....a MaxiJet 1200 Powerhead attached to a popbottle filled with foam, carbon, and ammonia remover....and a 300 watt heater 0_0 I bought that, because apparantly the powerhead adds heat to the water as well. I also bought two bags of play sand, and have some driftwood and a few plants for it, but I need more. I have large rocks as well...who would like that environment?

My jewels and parrots are close in size, and I've never seen my jewels attack them, even when they spawned. I'm sure other people have had problems with jewels though, I have heard of them being aggressive, but haven't seen it in my tank. I recently added some yellow labs with one of my small parrots and they get along pretty well. Some flaring back and forth, but nobody has any nips out of their fins and they're all doing well. Cichlids (I found) like sand quite a bit, they like to dig around and suck in and spit it out all over the place. Most cichlids like to eat plants, I haven't successfully kept any plants with my cichlids ever, so I use fakers.
