Help one of my girlfriends clawed frog is very bloated, it seems to have fluid under the skin on its back and legs(it ripples when it swims).Hes still eating although not as much.

Any advice, apparently its quite common but I cant find a positive cure anywhere.

From everything I remember reading back when I got mine, its dropsy. Don't think there is a cure, but google might give some possible ideas.

sure sounds like dropsy
there is a method of cureing frog dropsy by peicing the skin
thus allowing the fluid to escape. that is however best done by a vet

Thanks I might give the Vets a call then.

2 of my african dwarf clawed frogs died of dropsy. So if you have any more i would advise you separate them from the diseased one.

@ above poster:
They are either African clawed, or African Dwarf, no such thing as African dwarf clawed frog.
@ OP These frogs eat anything, it shouldn't be too hard to get a varied diet. I use shimp pellets, reptilre/amphibian sticks, plankton, dry shrimp, goldfish, minnows, flakes. Very important to have a varied diet and its not hard to get them to accept other foods. Good luck!

I have been giving him baths in one of those 1-2 gallon plastic tanks once a day.In the tank I dissolve 3 teaspoons of tonic salt and 1 teaspoon of epsom salts.I also add in a little flaygl(antibiotic).Once in there I chop up some small earthworms and he guzzles them all down.I leave him in no more than 2 hours then return him to a nice clean tank.Hes shown a lot of improvement and is now only half as bloated as he was and is much more active and his appetite is better than ever.I have also got him eating a few more types of food including reptomin and chopped prawn.

Great to hear he is improving! Just wondering how active is the Frog (before/after bloating). Trying to see if the fish keep mine active, or if I just got a lazy frog.

Of the two shes the less active, the big male swims about a lot.The smaller we think is female, when she was really bloated she didnt move much but now shes getting better she swims about searching for food etc.

Good news, Sheppy the frog made a full recovery and has gone back to my girlfriends to be reunited with Guiness his buddy.I'm not sure what was the key to his recovery but he seemed less and less bloated after each salt bath.I was also giving him reptomin sticks soaked in flagl(fish antibiotics).

that's good news indeed.
give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done :good:
