I have 15 bettas at the minute. All but one came from WalMart, and all but one came home in a bad state. This specific little guy had no fins or tail and generally looked like crap when he left the shelf. Well, I've had him for a couple of months now and he now has a tail and his fins again, but I noticed a couple of weeks ago that he was starting to get bloated. My stomach hit the floor as I initially thought it was dropsy, but there's never been any pineconing and I've sucessfully treated it before, so I know that's not what I'm dealing with. Weird, but good, or so I thought. Anyway, I guessed he was perhaps constipated so I tried fasting him and that didn't work, so I tried him on cooked, deshelled peas. Again, this didn't work.

I must admit, I've been really ill lately so I haven't been able to give my fish the full attention that they need. I've only really been in my fish room for feeding and water changes - no real time has been spent with them, but I have noticed that my little boy is getting more and more bloated as time goes by, and doesn't appear to be doing much in the way of poos. He's got fine, dark gravel sprinkled on the bottom of his bowl, but I still don't manage to find much, if anything at all, in the way of waste when I do his water changes.

He's acting absolutely fine. There's a nice big bubble nest by the evening of each water change that's always there, he darts around his bowl like he's on something, and he's an absolute porker at dinner time. I've cut him down to two pellets a day - I don't want to starve him, but I also really don't want to make his problem any worse than it already is. He seems hungry, though. He literally jumps out of his water to attack my hand when he sees food over the surface of his water. I really can't find anything wrong with him at all, other than he's really bloated.

What does this sound like? Any ideas at all?

I thought it could perhaps be an internal growth of some sort, but it's his entire tummy that's big. I mean, is this "normal" in that kind of situation?

I just feel a bit stumped. I've had my boys for AGES now, and I've never had this kind of problem before.

ANY help would be brilliant. Thanks!

wish i could be more help because i just adore bettas but ive only had one bloated fish in my life and i was a noob and knew squat. sawy and wish i could be more help! (i heard that salt helps with bloat and live foods are supposed to help but don't quote me cause this is just from past research) wet his pellets before you feed him cause this makes them easier to digest.

try a change in diet? maybe that might help. but im a noob an i over feed mine enough as it is :p every time i go by he gets his fair share. but i cant help it hes so damn cute!!! blue eyed pastel!

I am going through the same thing right now. He belongs to my mother, but I have taken him to try an solve his problem. She first showed hm to me about 3 weeks ago. For the past 2 weeks he has been getting nothing but peas. Even then only every 3 days. I am afraid to give him anything else, because he looks like he is going to explode. Same as yours, everything else seems fine.
I don't know what else to do. I thought about meds food for internal parasites. The problem is that I am afraid any food will kill him, since I have not seen 1 poop, in 3 weeks.

Sorry, I can't offer any help, but atleast you know your not alone.

Constipation- This is often caused by a diet without enough variety, or by feeding too many starchy type foods. Symptoms: If your fish is having trouble passing feces, or if they are forever trailing behind a fish, your fish may be suffering from constipation. Treatment: Feeding your fish a diet with more roughage and a greater variety sometimes helps! Feed live foods such as (wax worms, brine shrimp, tubiflex worms, etc.) peas, spinach. If you can get your fish to eat one grain of Epson salt it can also help aid with the constipation. Soaking dry fish food in some water taken from the tank will soften the food and help in the digestion process. (back to top) More info on constipation/diarrhea

How long did you fast him for? How many times did you give him peas? It really sounds like he is constipated. Maybe try fasting him for a week and see what happens.

Not having food won't starve him. I have a girl that refuses to eat. She hasn't eaten in nearly a month, no matter what I offer her. She is still alive, though a little skinny.

I have heard in the past that epsom salt baths supposedly help with constipation, but that they are very stressful and should only be used as a last resort.

Live foods might help, or you could try frozen bloodworms. I hear they are good too.

Personally I would start with fasting him until you see a poo, or a week, which ever comes first.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

I gave him peas for 3 days which didn't help him poo so for the rest of that week (4 days...) I fasted him.

I'm going to give it another shot though and see if a full week does make a difference. I'll go and get him some decent food, too. I did get some bloodworm and waterfleas, but he won't touch them, so I'll see what happens after a week.

I gave him a 100% water change last night and woke up to a huge bubble nest this morning, and he's busy wiggling his butt around all the time so I wasn't too worried about the possibility of parisites. I'll keep a close eye on him and see what he's doing in a week though.

Thanks again :)
