Me and my cousin are looking after my other cousins many crazy pets while she is away and the other day we discovered her Axolotl is bloated and floating upsidedown at the top of the water. Does anyone know what would cause this and maybe some kind of treatment? I only know fish diseases, maybe treat for internal bacteria or with epsome salts?

hey i use to have axolotls and the same thing happened with mine and the man at my local fish shop (really great place) said that
i should try to feed them some live brime shrimp so give that ago if you like.

:)

Check out www.caudata.org - they specialise in axolotl's. Bloat can be fatal if it's not treated ASAP; check out the site, but I seem to think they recommend fridging them.

Could be something blocking the digestive tract,
whats the substrate used?
Could be air trapped in the animals stomach from surface feeding,
But that shouldnt be a problem.
Otherwise the bloating could be food rotting in its stomach,
this could be for a number of reasons,
too low temperature for digestion shouldnt be the problem unless the temperature is very low.
but the usual room temperature shouldnt cause any problem to that.

Whats the usual diet to the animal?

and does it have any tank mates?

i hope the information you provide can help,
if anyone else has any ideas please let them know :)

But i agree with Dipsydoo, a customer of mine recently lost his axolotl to bloat,
i recommended him fridging it, but be careful with that.
www.caudata.org & axolotl.org are brilliant sits which should be able to prove more info on bloating and how to treat it as i've yet to suffer it myself.
