I just got two black tetras last night and when i got home from work today one of them where dead. I'm not sure what i did wrong.

It was a beginning kit. One gallon. They guy at the fish store told me to put water in it and then 5 drops of this chemical to help kill bacteria.

Kill bacteria!?!? Bacteria is your most important part of cycling and fish keeping. Without bacteria fish can't survive. It's bacteria that convert dangerous levels of ammonia(created by fish urine and poo, and left over food) to nitrite and then convert that to a safer product called nitrate which is safe for fish to live in. I don't see why he would've given you that, maybe he gave you something to kill toxins in water like a de-chlorinater. Did you de-chlorinate your water then?

Your fish are probably dying from the ammonia levels in your new tank. I am sorry to say this, but if this is true then your other tetra wont be long after it :(
